We were stuck in an old house, with no savings and trapped in an area that my wife and I despised. Every time I looked out of the window, all I saw were bricks and broken bottles.

I tried to be creative, to find happiness in the small things, but with fireworks thrown at the window, police sirens, motorbikes and gangs outside on the noisy street, I always became distracted.

It felt like we’d never escape, never find the calm, open space, distant fields, swaying trees or peace and quiet we craved. Then I lost my job, and the cold damp walls closed in even more.

That’s when I picked up the paintbrush. It was old, hardened through time, stiff-bristled, paint-stained.

I felt mentally weak, my will depleted, like I couldn’t put up much of a fight at all. But as I began to paint that first mountain, something shifted. The bristles of the brush softened with use, but then the brush was too soft, so I grabbed my trusty palette knife. My loose frail grip became white knuckle tight.

My mountain stood tall, defiant, like it had been through everything and still remained. I scraped the snow across its peaks, bending the blade, and I felt its endurance, and in turn felt myself become more powerful, more formidable.

That sound of the knife scraping on the canvas still gives me goosebumps. Every time. The feeling never goes away. It makes me feel strong, like Superman in the sun, or Batman in the night. It wasn’t about escaping anymore - it was braving, enduring and surviving the storm.

My wife and I saved little by little, scratching and clawing, day by day, slowly but surely, the struggle making us stronger, as we climbed and conquered ‘our mountain’. We were eventually able to move house, and we now live in our forever home, on a peaceful street with distant hills in view. We made it.

Every day we are reminded we are stronger than we think and I want my distant mighty mountains to remind you of that too... #StrongLikeMountain.
